(Ruseștii Noi continued…)

Instead of reading about Moldovan religious culture in class, the HESC volunteers decided to take a day trip to 3 monasteries close to Chișinău.

Moldova flourished under the leadership of Stephen the Great (1457-1504), who defended the principality of Moldova successfully against the Ottoman Empire. Many churches and monasteries were built under his regency. Stephen the Great is regarded as the main national hero of contemporary Moldova. His statue stands in the city center of Chișinău, the main boulevard is named for him, and his picture is printed on every banknote.

Approximately 98% of Moldovans are Orthodox Christian, but during Moldova’s soviet involvement, religion was banned (partially) and the majority of the monasteries were vacant. Moldova has allocated a substantial amount of money to repairs and reconstruction.
